Shaker Square - Then and Now
Moreland Courts is set adjacent to Shaker Square, Cleveland’s answer to the circles of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and D.C. You can drive
from DuPont Circle to Hyde Park in Chicago and not see another area with the grace
and charm of a European urban circle.
Shaker Square was finished in 1929, designed after European Central markets,
most notably Amalienborg Square in Copenhagen. Its Georgian architecture still
thrills, and it, like its neighbor Moreland Courts, is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

RTA train passes Moreland Courts on its way through Shaker Square.
Currently, the Square features a
six-screen first-run movie theater, many retail shops, a large supermarket,
and has recently become a magnet for fine restaurants with six of Cleveland’s top-rated
restaurants situated on the circle. The
Shaker and Van Aken rapid transit
lines run through the square, adding ambience and simple convenient
transportation to downtown and the airport. University Circle and its
world-class institutions are a 5-minute drive.
The Square also features a summer outdoor
Farmer’s Market, free fall band
concerts, and beautiful winter holiday lighting displays. The Square is a joy in
all seasons.
It is a 5-minute drive west to
University Circle, Cleveland’s cultural and
educational center, and a 10-minute walk through a beautiful residential
neighborhood to the Shaker Lakes Nature Center and trails. See
